  • Brain damage fears for girl
        Date:2017-12-04

A four-year-old girl may still suffer from long-term brain damage even when she recovers after being allegedly tortured by a lesbian couple, her mother fears.

The girl, who had brain surgery on Saturday, remained in a critical condition yesterday.

The two suspects - surnamed Chan, 36, and Fung, 41 - were tasked with taking care of the girl and her twin sister for two weeks as their 29-year-old mother, surnamed Cheng, was busy moving home.

Yesterday, the enraged mother said the older twin was stable but was still breathing through a tube.

"I could not have imagined they have turned out like this," she said. The mother even went as far as saying that she would like to "kill them."

Both Chan and Fung were arrested in Mong Kok on Friday after the girl was found in a semi-conscious state by her mother. She was bleeding in the brain and had burns and bruises.

The pair will appear at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today to face one count of wounding.

Cheng said she met Chan and Fung in jail when she was serving a two-year sentence. During the period, the kids were living in a children's home but Cheng took them back after she was released.

About a year after Chan and Fung got out of prison, they told the mother that they both liked kids and were willing to take care of Cheng's daughters.

It was not the first time Chan and Fung had temporarily looked after the kids and in return for doing so, Cheng paid them several hundred dollars.

On November 22, Cheng asked the couple to take care of the two girls as she had to move out from a rooftop unit in an old tenement house in Hung Hom.

The mother took the younger child back two days later after Chan phoned Cheng and said the couple could not cope with the twins. However, the elder twin was left alone with the suspects.

A doctor at Kwong Wah Hospital suspected the girl had been physically abused.
