  • Trump adjusts tune for Korean talks
    Date:2018-01-08

US President Donald Trump, shelving comparisons about the size of "nuclear buttons," says he is open to talking with the North Korean leader he's called "Little Rocket Man" and hopes for progress from talks between the Koreas.

And Trump, who last year lambasted his secretary of state for mentioning negotiations with the nuclear-armed North, said a direct conversation with Kim Jong Un could happen.

"Sure, I always believe in talking," Trump said. "I wouldn't have a problem with that at all."

But he was quick to add that talks would have conditions.

The first formal talks between the Koreas in more than two years are set for the Panmunjom border town tomorrow as the rivals discuss cooperation on the Winter Olympics in the South.

But tensions are high because of the North's nuclear and missile programs.

"Right now they're talking Olympics," Trump said. "It's a big start."

He added that Kim knows "I'm not messing around, not even a little bit, not even 1 percent. He understands that."

On the Koreas meeting, Trump said "if something can happen and something can come out of those talks that would be a great thing for the world."

Trump also said he spoke with South Korea's President Moon Jae In, who "thanks me very much for my tough stance," claiming his manner helped push the North to talk with the South.
