  • Third bomb menace
        Date:2018-05-11

Another unexploded bomb was found at the Sha Tin-Central rail link construction site in Wan Chai yesterday - the third one discovered within a limited area in six months.

Construction workers found the metal object they quickly decided was a bomb while digging at the junction of Convention Avenue and Hung Hing Road at 4.30pm.

It was about 12 meters down and 10m away from where two identical US 1,000-pound bombs dropped during World War II were found in January.

Police soon agreed they were facing another bomb. The find led progressively to disruptions as experts prepared to deal with the menace.

The Transport Department told motorists to avoid driving to Wan Chai North at about 6pm.

Some 30 minutes later the Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced the Harbour Road Sports Centre was being shut until further notice, and ferry services between Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui were suspended from 8pm - the same time that all lanes of Tonnochy Road between Gloucester Road and Convention Avenue were close.

The Tonnochy Road flyover was also closed and buses were being diverted.

Meanwhile, police had cleared the area near the construction site by around 9pm, though because the bomb had landed vertically it was going to be tough to tackle and would almost certainly require more than 24 hours for disposal officers to handle it.

A spokeswoman for the rail operator MTR Corp Ltd said since the finds of the two bombs at the beginning of the year engineering personnel at the construction site had enhanced safety, with special measures when excavations reach what had been the seabed - a risky level.

Of the two American-dropped bombs discovered at the site in January, one was 25 meters down and needed 26 hours for experts to prepare it for on-site detonation.

Five days later a similar bomb, 10m from the first, proved more of a challenge for officers to detonate as it was angled and 35m down. That one took 24 hours to defuse.
