  • HKUST student accused of hacking professor's account
        Date:2018-04-16

A university student arrested for allegedly hacking into his professor's e-mail account in an attempt to cheat in an examination has been released on bail pending further investigation.

The 21-year-old Indian student at the University of Science and Technology allegedly used the account a day before a science test to send an e-mail to another professor who was also responsible for drafting the questions. The e-mail asked the professor to use certain questions.

But since the exam papers had already been printed, the professor did not make changes.

The alleged hacking came to light on Thursday when the two professors talked about the strange request. The university's information and technology department determined that the account had been hacked and police were called.

The student was arrested in a flat in Aberdeen on Saturday on suspicion of accessing a computer with dishonest intent. An investigation by the District Investigation Team 1 of Tseung Kwan O district is under way.

A police source said the suspect is not an exchange student. He majors in science and has always had a huge interest in computer-related subjects. He only did it for fun and regretted his actions, the source added.

A spokeswoman said the university uses double-authentication technology for its network. She described the hacking as an isolated incident, and said the university will review and improve its network security system regularly.

This is not the first time HKUST's computer system has been hacked. In 2012, the university was hacked 11 times by a mechanical engineering department staff member, who attempted to steal documents and scholarly journals.
